Project: Sustainable energy for rural communities

Jim Kleiber is looking to build access to sustainable sources of energy for communities in rural areas by tapping into local resources.
His current plan is to identify resources available locally that could, by applying the right technologies, be used to generate energy. He interested in working with resources that might otherwise be treated or seen as waste. Part of his work will involve developing new technologies where necessary, to convert these resources into energy.
Jim hopes that these technologies will increase the self-reliance of rural communities, lower the costs of energy and help clean-up the environment.
At New Ideas for Africa (29/04/09), participants suggested Jim assess existing resources on the ground and focus on small-scale energy provision at a household or neighbourhood level. TED.com and the Shell Foundation were among the sources of research and funding highlighted.
Jim is hoping to speak with product designers and engineers next, in particular those based in Tanzania. He is going to spend some time researching waste tanks in India too.
